History and Education

This SIG aims to develop a vibrant and supportive community of scholars working in the fields of History Education and History of Education (including Curriculum History, and History of Ideas in the Philosophy of Education). The SIG provides opportunities to advance innovative and robust research in the history of education and history education, foster national and international networks among scholars and the building of cross‐institutional research partnerships, and seeks to actively mentor early career researchers and doctoral students working in history and education.

History and Education Now: concepts, methods, questions.

The AARE History and Education SIG, in conjunction with the Australian and New Zealand History of Education Society, hosted a successful two-day research workshop in February. The workshop explored current research approaches in the history of education, from theoretical and methodological debates to practical strategies and reflections from historians in action. The sessions attracted researchers working across a wide range of educational research, including policy, curriculum studies, inequality, social justice, comparative education and globalisation; others were undertaking or interested in beginning historical studies in education, or had broad interests in the historical context of contemporary agendas in educational policy, practice and research.

During this workshop about 55 participants treated to a stimulating and provoking keynote presentation from Professor Tom Popkewitz on ‘The historical possibility of practical knowledge as the object of change: Notes on the emergence of a system of reasoning’. A video recording of this lecture is available here
