Strategic Initiative report

From L to R: Tim Corcoran, Lise Bird Claiborne and Tom Billington, presenters at the event.

In March 2015, Dr Tim Corcoran, Senior Research Fellow at The Victoria Institute, was joined by Professor Tom Billington from the University of Sheffield (UK) and Associate Professor Lise Bird Claiborne from the University of Waikato (NZ), for a national seminar series critically examining psychology’s contributions to education. The Australian Association for Research in Education sponsored the series via a Strategic Initiatives grant awarded at the end of 2014.

The daylong seminars were presented in three locations. The first was hosted by Victoria University in Melbourne. The series then travelled to Brisbane for a seminar held at the Queensland University of Technology. The final seminar was held in Perth and hosted by the Department of Education North Metropolitan Region Office.  Each seminar was well supported by a range of educational researchers and school-based practitioners. Those attending had the opportunity to engage with three internationally recognised educational psychologists whose work interrogates the bases upon which psychological practices with young people are justified. The sessions promoted vigorous discussion inviting participants to review potentials for school-based interventions to work with and beyond more commonplace psychopathologies in ways that are both ethical and scientific.
