Abstract:
The paper deals with the findings from research into the part-time employment patterns of teacher education students. The study focuses upon the ways in which these students cope with the competing demands on their time and energy which arise out of their work, study and personal commitments.

The experiences of these student workers reinforce their already strong individualist beliefs about work and the work ethic, and (for the majority) give rise to negative views of the unemployed. Implications for teacher education are discussed along with aspects which require further research (eg, variations in experiences/attitudes between subgroups of student workers).
