Abstract:
This paper examines the growth of secondary schooling in Australian States, beginning with the establishment of grammar schools in each State. It traces the impact of the State universities on secondary schooling and stresses the slow growth of State secondary schools until the post World War II education boom.

The paper asks who secondary schooling was for, and what a secondary schooling did for those who completed it. Somepatterns are traced and some tentative answers are offered. Case studies are presented for discussion.
