Abstract:
This paper presents some of the findings of an ARGS funded study of the "Art and Science of Headship". Heads/chairpersons of de- partments and schools in eight Australian universities were sur- veyed in 1985 and a selection of them interviewed in 1986. Role conflicts which heads may experience, their attitude to own aca- demic activities and to administration, their position in the or- ganisational structure and the variety of demands made on them are discussed in relation to their own priorities.
