Abstract:
The historical development of the image of science and of scientists will be explored concomitent with an analyses of how education reinforces its popular image. Textbook representations, curriculum packaging, and classroom behaviors which contribute to a masculine image will be examined. In addition, research and practice which suggest the efficacy of gender-free science for all students will be presented. A discrepancy model will be developed which contrasts today's actual science classroom with tomorrow's ideal science classroom. Last, the pathway from the actual to the ideal will be explored.
