Abstract:
The research reported in this paper examines the approaches to learning used by 160 first year teacher education students in one subject in their first semester of study. Students were divided into nine different classes and for two of these classes a deliber- ate attempt was made to improve students' use of transformational approaches to learning by constructing a learning context based on recent work in the field of student learning. The findings have implications for the improvement of student learning in tertiary settings.
