This paper is part of a larger research project into the problem of teacher resistance. The DurDose of this project is to 'ground' resistance theory in the empirical world by focussing on teacher culture as a mediating factor between structural determinants of the social world and li4ed experiences. In this paper we will demonstrate how ideologies that pervade teacher culture, organisational features of the school environment and individual biographies interact to structure action and the significance of these structuring influences for developing resistant practices. The central theoretic for understanding the limits and possibilities of teacher resistance is Giddens's theory of structuration.
