SOLO And The School Curriculum

Year: 1986

Author: Collis, Kevin

Type of paper: Abstract refereed

By taking school science as an example the author attempts to flesh out for practice the hypotheses which arise on the basis of the theoretical implications of intellectual skills theory as represented by the SOLO Taxonomy (Biggs & Collis 1982) (see also Fischer, 1980). The paper takes into consideration three aspects
of a curriculum: objectives, content and assessment. Objectives for years 7-12 are classified according to solo levels and related to appropriate year targets, processes and exit levels using the Physics concept of Heat for content illustration. Both open and closed assessment procedures to evaluate the achievement of the objectives are discussed.
