A search of the research literature under the heading of spouse abuse identified 140 distinct research studies. This paper provides a critical review of this body of research. The review is in three sections: (i) methodological problems, (2) results, and (3) theoretical approaches. The review concludes that researchers who have focused on the patriarchal structure of Western society and the personality characteristics of abusive husbands have made more progress in identifying the probable causes of wife abuse than the researchers who have focused on the personality characteristics of abused wives or the researchers who have focused on factors like vlctlm-provocation, alcohol use, and stress.
