Abstract:
State school systems across Australia are currently experiencing a period of rapid organizational change, characterized by:
• the decentralization of administrative functions;
• the devolution of powers to school communities;
• the reduction of senior positions and levels of decision-
making;
• the introduction of new accountability mechanisms; and
• the adoption of business management methods and corporate
planning approaches
These trends are briefly reviewed and an attempt is made to project beyond the rhetoric of the reformers to anticipate practical consequences for schools and for the longer-term quality of State education provision.
