Type of paper: Abstract refereed

A major evaluative study of the practicum as it operated on two campuses of Victoria College, was recently conducted. A comprehensive questionnaire was presented to a sample of each of the three groups involved - students, cooperating teachers and supervising lecturers. This survey sought to gauge the extent of knowledge about specific aspects of teacher training and to probe attitudes to key issues.

This paper will report the findings of the study, but more importantly will raise issues and suggest directions for the practicumwhich address the question of what might hopefully be learned about teaching, as opposed to what is currently learned, by student teachers during the practicum.
