The study reviewed the literature on the educational needs and policy statements relating to adolescent NESB students in the major education systems in Australia. Data is presented on the range of pro- fessional development programs that were available to secondary teachers in contact with NESB students in all states between 1979 and 1985. The data gathered in the national survey was used to determine the adequacy and relevance of the programs available. Seven case studies were undertaken to assess the success of particular types of professional development activities provided for staff working with NESB students.
