This paper reports the results of a study into teachers' under- standing and conceptions of the technical construct 'culture'. The study, employing both qualitative and quantitative research techniques, focusses on the content of teachers' knowledge of this concept. It is shown that teachers' concepts of culture tend to be individualistic rather than sociological.
