Intrerpreting Diagrams: A Problem Solving Perspective

In recent years, science textbooks and resource materials have increasingly made use of pictorial and diagrammatic represen- tations to supplement the printed text. A key assumption underlying this development is that visual images make concepts more accessible to students. This paper compares the way science teachers and students at various levels interpreted diagrammatic material of the type used in the elementary science texts. Differences in the way subjects approached the material are discussed from a problem solving perspective.
