Recent discussions on overseas students in Australia after the Jackson and Goldring Reports in 1984 have led to government decisions on the use of quotos and fees. The focus of discussion has been on the private undergraduate students who comprise the majority of overseas students. However, sponsored postgraduate students have different characteristics and pose different policy problems. This paper looks at recent studies of sponsored Indonesian postgraduate students undertaken for ADAB. The
good success rates of these students overall are seen to mask a number of difficulties. Policies and support mechanisms need to be developed carefully to avoid increasing the difficulties. In order to promote maximum benefits from the activity comple- mentary activities are needed, but the funding mechanisms for these activities are a matter of some concern.
