A Multilevel Analysis of School Culture in NSW

Abstract:
Research on school culture inherently involves data from the school-level, as well as from the student-level. The present study illustrates the principles of bilevel factor analysis and hierarchical linear modelling by applying these models to data from 5,932 Year 12 students from fifty Catholic schools randomly sampled from the 13 Dioceses of NSW. Goldstein's ML3 package (Rasbash, et al, 1990) and McDonald's BIRAM program (McArdle & McDonald, 1984) were used for the analyses. The second-level factor variance was estimated to be about 10%.
