This paper is based on work completed during my Ph.D. research on the Enabling and Disabling Affects of a Hypermedia System on Information Seeking. As such this paper is but a very thin slice of a much larger project. I will first provide a thumb nail overview of hypermedia systems and the current version of the Perseus data base. I will then briefly present the rhetoric of the advocates and the critics of the use of hypermedia systems in education. Next, I will describe the context in which I conducted the research and the methodology used. The bulk of the paper examines the users, the tasks they were performing and the tools provided by Perseus. The paper concludes with implications for researchers, hypermedia developers and educators.
