Abstract:
This paper draws upon a major study of employment in a large regional centre of Victoria completed in 1991*. It yielded data suggesting that youth unemployment was considerably greater than official Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Commonwealth Employment Service (CES) and the Department of Social Security (DSS) figures. The methodology and findings of this study will be discussed with particular emphasis on youth unemployment rates which will be compared with retention rates for the centres Secondary Schools. Implications for social policy makers and educationalists will be explored along with suggestions for further research.
