Abstract:
This paper reports on a pilot study which explored the viability of relating the different approaches to school leadership analysis of school organisational culture and the findings of the effective schools literature on principals. Drawing on Bass (1990) who highlighted the differences between transactional and transformational leadership, and Barth (1988) who explored participatory leadership, we have tested the use of an adaptation of Lundberg's three tiered conceptual framework for analysing organisational culture and considered implications for improving students' learning. In this pilot study, we have not explored this final link with student learning. This will provide a focus for a follow-up project.
