The university of the South Pacific plays a major role in facilitating the development of teachers to work in schools through out the South Pacific. This paper examines teacher educators’ perceptions of the attributes of an effective teacher in order to provide a framework to examine the implementation of practicum program in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary). The paper argues that there is a need to change the focus of the practicum from an apprenticeship to model based on reflective practice. Facilitating the development of reflective practicionners should increase the likelihood of more appropriate teaching practices in schools.
