Abstract:
This mixed-methods study investigates the impact of authentic and flexible assessments on student engagement, empowerment, and inclusivity within higher education. Through the perspectives of six experienced academics from various humanities disciplines, we explore how assessments grounded in real-world contexts and offering varied presentation formats can enhance the student learning experience. These academics provide rich insights into the practical implementation of these assessment strategies across different humanities fields.
Authentic assessments enable students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in scenarios that mirror real-life challenges, fostering a deeper connection between academic work and professional readiness. Flexible assessments, on the other hand, offer students the autonomy to choose from a range of assessment modes, accommodating their individual learning preferences and needs. Together, these approaches contribute to a more inclusive and equitable learning environment by recognizing and addressing the diverse capabilities of students.
The research findings highlight the significance of aligning assessments with intended learning outcomes and the need for educators to rethink traditional assessment practices.
