Abstract:
Derived from doctoral research, this paper proposes criteria for practice-based encounters within socially engaged art, drawing on Connell’s conceptions of encounter (2013), performative encounters by Anja Kanngieser (2012), and my artistic experiments (2019-2023). Practice-based encounters herald a performative approach that embraces ambiguity and diverse nuances, inviting a socially engaged form of expression and contributing insights into innovative methodologies and transformative practices.

Emphasizing their educational implications, practice-based encounters are positioned as potent pedagogical tools to visualise transversal relationships between different identities, values, perspectives and experiences. Their interdisciplinary nature encourages experimental exploration, reshapes knowledge acquisition and dissemination, and fosters innovative approaches to learning, encouraging educators and learners to redefine their roles and pathways for knowledge production in a changing world. In the broader context of societal engagement, practice-based encounters emerge as a transformative force—disrupting power dynamics, erasing barriers, and nurturing mutual respect and autonomy. This transformative shift promotes an alternative narrative of social progress characterized by collaboration and inclusivity, fostering equitable and harmonious coexistence.

The presentation will begin with a brief performance inviting participants to immerse themselves in the spirit of practice-based encounters within the proposed theoretical framework.
