Abstract:
The Australian Educational Researcher (AER) is a leading international journal in the field of education and educational research that publishes works related to early childhood, primary and secondary school education, and alternative, adult, vocational, and higher education. The journal started in 1974 and in 2024 celebrates its 50th anniversary. Motivated by this special event, this study aims to present a general bibliometric overview of the leading trends that have occurred in the journal during this period. The objective is to identify the most cited documents, most productive authors and institutions, countries publishing in the journal, and how the journal connects with other journals in the field of educational research. The work also develops a keyword and topical analysis to visualize the most popular topics published in the journal and how these keywords and topics connect.

To do so, the article uses the Scopus database to analyze the bibliographic information of the journal and uses a methodology commonly used in bibliometrics (Martínez-López et al. 2018). The search was carried out in May 2024 and focuses on articles and reviews. The study analyses the results of these documents through citation thresholds and with box-whisker plots. More than 80% of the papers published in the journal are written by researchers working at Australian institutions. Currently, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Melbourne are the most productive universities in the journal.

To develop a deeper analysis of the bibliometric results, this work uses the visualization of similarities (VOS) viewer software to graphically map the bibliographic information. The approach uses several bibliometric techniques including co-citation, bibliographic coupling, and co-occurrence of author keywords. The results show how the leading authors, institutions, and journals connect. From the journal perspective, it is interesting to mention that AER is strongly influenced by Teaching and Teacher Education, Journal of Education Policy, Australian Journal of Education, and the Educational Researcher. The keyword and topical analysis visualize the most popular topics published in AER and are in accordance with the aims and scope of the journal. Currently, the most frequent keywords are Higher Education, Teacher Education, Education, Australia, and Indigenous Education.
