Abstract:
This 60-minute workshop provides the participants an opportunity to explore the innovative use of speculative drama as a methodological tool in environmental and climate change education. The process includes an imaginative enactment to explore the futures and environmental scenarios, fostering a deep understanding and a space for critical thinking about environmental issues among students.
Speculative drama’s emergent pedagogical process leverages that creative and imaginative role-playing to help learners navigate complex environmental issues. This workshop is built on a recent PhD research that was conducted with young co-researchers aged 14- 17 from Sri Lanka and Australia exploring the futures about climate change. The process facilitates discussion on environmental awareness and activism.
By stepping into imagined future scenarios, participants can better understand the long-term consequences of current environmental practices and policies. The aims of this workshop are;
Introduce participants to the concept and foundational principles of speculative drama.
Demonstrate the practical application of speculative drama in environmental education through hands-on activities, and
Engage participants in creating and performing speculative scenarios, enabling them to experience the pedagogical benefits of this method firsthand.
The workshop draws insights and learnings from the above mentioned PhD study which features its effectiveness in environmental education. Key findings from the research indicate that speculative drama:
Enhances students' ability to visualise and comprehend the impacts of climate change.
Fosters empathy towards various perspectives on environmental issues, including those of non-human entities and future generations.
Encourages critical analysis and reflection on personal and collective roles in environmental sustainability.
