Abstract:
Fostering affirming school cultures for gender and sexuality diverse young individuals is critical work, especially considering the pervasive disparities in school wellbeing and connectedness they often experience. As crucial determinants and reflections of students’ school life, student belonging and connectedness correlate with student wellbeing, academic performance, and broader opportunities for interpersonal and learning outcomes. Drawing on qualitative and quantitative findings from three school communities, this paper will explore these disparities between queer and cishet student groups and what sexuality and gender diverse young people report make a positive difference to their schooling: 'significant people,' 'relationships and dialogue,' and 'groups and materials'. Including a review of the role of school-wide initiatives, including inclusive uniforms, written resources, and safe spaces facilitated by student groups, this paper advocates for proactive strategies and curricular inclusions that embrace diversity, challenge prevailing gender norms and foster a sense of belonging for all students. Emerging findings demonstrate that certain approaches from school communities can promote inclusivity, respect, and support for gender and sexuality diverse young people, ultimately enhancing their academic, social, and emotional well-being in the face of unequal school experiences.
