Sociology of Education

The Sociology of Education SIG has been established with a view to creating a visible and active community of sociologists within education, in co-ordination with our sister SIG in the Australian Sociological Association.

We have the following aims:

  • To build a network researchers interested in sociological approaches to education and stimulate debate and discussion;
  • To pursue opportunities for advancing sociological analysis of education and sociology of education in broad terms ;
  • To encourage and support postgraduates and early career researchers in the sociology of education;
  • To provide a basis for streams on the sociology of education at AARE conferences;

The Sociology of Education SIG has a regular newsletter as well as running symposia and workshops.  Our focus is broad, but includes the social processes underpinning schooling, workplace learning, family/school relationships, stratification, globalization, and pedagogy.  We are concerned with empirical and conceptual work engaging with social theories of class, culture, identity and knowledge.
