The Schools & Education Systems Special Interest Group is proud to host: The National Evidence Institute – creating the most value for schools and systems
Please join us at 2pm on Thursday 25 July for this informative and interactive session focusing on the federal government’s plan to establish a National Evidence Institute (NEI). While the overarching focus and intent of the NEI has generally received support from Education Ministers, there are still a number of key elements and options under consideration. As consultations move forward and begin to include smaller stakeholders, this is a timely opportunity for members of this SIG to collaborate and discuss how a future NEI would value add to our goal of connecting researchers with schools & systems.
For this multi-location event, we will be hearing from three experts on use of evidence in schools/systems to inform a broader Q&A discussion. Three short presentations of 20 minutes will then open up to those in attendance to debate and discuss.

Matt Deeble, Director, Evidence for Learning and Practice Lead, Education
Matt is responsible for Evidence for Learning‘s strategy, fundraising and system engagement and promotion. Matt has more than 20 years’ experience in building and running enterprises in education, health and clean technology. He was involved in provisioning the first Internet services in Australian schools and developing internet management software used by thousands of schools in Australia, NZ, the UK and USA. More recently he has worked on data, identity and privacy projects for the National Schools Interoperability Program and on an online career profiling service in Higher and Vocational Education. He is also a non-executive director of the evidence efficiency platform; Covidence. Matt holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University.
Annemaree Carroll, Associate Dean (Research) Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences, The University of Queensland
Annemarree is Chief Investigator on the ARC Linkage project titled School-Wide Approaches for Developing Social and Emotional Wellbeing: New Understandings of Positive Identities, Emotions and Learning in Adolescents and Co-ordinator of Translational Outcomes within the Australian Research Council Special Research Initiative – Science of Learning Research Centre. Annemaree is a registered psychologist and teacher. Her research activities focus on understanding the impact of emotions, attention, and behaviour on learning throughout child and adolescent development, developing innovative self-regulatory interventions for children (KooLKIDS) and youth (Mindfields) to bring about positive change in their lives, and implementing strategies that can be translated into educational outcomes. Her partnerships with the Queensland Department of Education have been particularly beneficial in establishing applied research that will make a difference in the lives of teachers and students.
Mark Rickinson, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, Monash University
Mark’s work is focused on understanding and improving the use of research in policy and practice. He is currently leading The Q Project (Quality Use of Evidence Driving Quality Education), a new 5-year initiative with the Paul Ramsay Foundation to improve the use of research evidence in Australian schools. Other recent projects include: ‘Getting Evidence Moving in Schools’ (Evidence for Learning), ‘Understanding School Engagement with Research’ (Catholic Education Melbourne) and ‘Use of Evidence in Education Policy’ (Victorian Department of Education and Training).
