New Special Interest Group (SIG)
You are cordially invited to the inaugural meeting of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) to take place at the annual AARE conference this year.
The title of the new SIG is:
Contemporary Theory, Poststructuralism and Governmentality.
Time: Wednesday 3rd December 1.00 - 1.45 pm
Venue: Room B201B QUT, Kelvin Grove campus.
There is currently a large amount of educational research being performed using the work of European and radical theorists such as Foucault, Deleuze, Bourdieu, Agamben, Habermas, Butler and others as well as a significant and growing body of work in education using Foucault's notion of 'governmentality'.
Given that there is no formal institutional support for this kind of work within the Australian educational context and limited support at an international level, the formation of such a SIG is timely.
Some of the preliminary aims of the SIG are:
  • to provide a forum for networking and discussion for people working in these areas both locally and internationally.
  • to provide a space and encouragement for people to submit their papers to the annual AARE conference
  • set up opportunities for publication
  • to establish a bibliography of work in the area
  • to organise seminars and small events outside the annual conference.
  • to liase with international groups such as the Foucault SIG in the AERA
  • to set up an information and networking website for the SIG. I will attach this to the michel-foucault.com site which attracts a large amount of traffic.
Other suggestions for activities that the SIG might engage in are very welcome and will be discussed at the inaugural meeting.
If you are unable to get to the meeting, please email me if you are interested in joining the SIG and please include any suggestions you might have about what you would like to see the SIG do.

Broadcast Message #1 for 17/11/2008
THE FUTURE OF AARE IS IN YOUR HANDS
Do you care about the future of educational research in Australia?
Do you think AARE has a role to play in fostering educational research?
Do you care how AARE uses your membership fees?
If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, then please vote in the current ballot for positions on the AARE Executive.
Very few ballots have been returned so far. If only ten per cent of members vote, can we call ourselves a democratic organisation?
All members were recently mailed a ballot form; if you have mislaid yours, please contact the AARE Office (aare@aare.edu.au) PHONE 03 59649031 immediately to obtain another.
Voting officially closes this Friday, 21 November, but late votes will be accepted for a few days afterwards.

WEBCASTS OF KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
This is your last chance to apply for an invitation to electronically attend one or all of the AARE 2008 Keynote Speaker sessions from your desktop. We can add your name to the list of people already enrolled for this free services for "stay at homes".
If you would like to hear the speeches of Bernadette Baker, Barry McGaw, Noel Gough and Martin Nakata and see their presentation on your computer send an email with the subject header "WEBEX - way of the future" to pjeff@aare.edu.au
With WEBEX you can see and hear and even ask questions [through the chairperson of the session]. AARE's sponsored WebEx service can handle up to 250 recipients of the webcasts and behind each invited enrolled person can sit a theatre full of people if you like. Together with the auditorium audience of 600 at the venue that means we could have 25,600 people listening to our research conference speakers. As a passionate believer in educational research - I wish!
AARE thanks WebEx [Cisco] for their sponsorship support of educational research.

CONFERENCE PAPERS 2008 - PAPER CODE NUMBERS
A guide to finding particular papers in the conference documentation. This information is to help you understand the measures we have taken to protect your interests in regard to correct attributions and subsequent academic credits for your work. It is also intended to assist you to relate Program Book entries and abstracts on OCS.
Coding of individual papers and refereed papers:
When proposals were entered into OCS the system assigned a 3 digit number to each. This number remained visible in OCS until the work was moved from "review" to "presentations". The software program then suppressed the numbers. It is easy to reverse digits when typing these 3 digit numbers. OCS will not search by these numbers.
AARE uses an alpha-numeric paper code numbering system comprising the first 3 letters of the proposer's surname, 08 to designate the year of the conference and 3 more digits [usually assigned by AARE Office]. This year the last 3 digits in AARE paper codes are the numbers given by the OCS software. It is much harder to miss-type AARE alpha-numeric codes and these are unique for referencing purposes world wide.
Coding:
AARE Office has entered into OCS the AARE paper code number [incorporating the OCS number] just in front of the title of the paper so that it shows when people consult the OCS abstracts in "presentations". Many people will do this to find out more details of papers in the time-table and the Program Book at conference. Many people will find the unique code very helpful when checking works after the conference.
Readers can cross-reference from the AARE Program Book [fully indexed by author, title, institution and paper code] to the abstracts in OCS. You can search in OCS by unique paper code number as well as author and title, but some symposia papers will not be found that way.
Symposia:
Papers that were proposed through OCS within symposia did not receive OCS numbers. Only the symposium received an OCS number. AARE Office has now given the symposium papers AARE paper codes for the Program Book and author credit purposes, but not within OCS. If a paper was put in as an individual proposal to OCS [and received an OCS number] as well as being part of a symposium [such as in the case of papers asking for full refereeing] then that paper has a paper code visible and searchable but other papers within symposia [that were not refereed] are only visible and searchable under the original symposium code.
Papers in symposia have paper codes with running numbers starting with 901 within the symposium paper code assigned to the original proposer. Thus Symposium 22: CRA08246 comprises 4 papers one of which is refereed. That one paper has the paper code SPR08080 and (r) but 3 other papers in that symposium, MAT08965, NEI08966 and CRA08967 are only visible under symposium code CRA08246. These codes [ MAT08965, NEI08966 and CRA08967] are in the Program Book and its index along with all other details of all papers.
Deposits of papers:
When papers are handed in at conference for the ACER Cunningham Library [Australian Education Index] and the AARE Conference Papers Collection or Digital Archive-Repository [Proceedings] they will be given the AARE paper codes according to the above principles if authors have not previously entered them. These unique paper codes will be in the URL for each paper on AARE website and all search engines such as Google. Thus work will appear on the WWW like http://www.aare.edu.au/05pap/gil05258.pdf . These paper codes will now also be part of each paper in OCS with the exceptions noted above.

YOUR VOTE IS IMPORTANT
The election for the 2009 AARE Executive is underway. Ballot papers were mailed to members last week - have you received yours?
This is the first election held under the new Constitution which introduces two- and three-year terms for Executive positions. And this year we have one of the largest fields of candidates for some time.
Please take this opportunity to influence the future of AARE - have your say in who should be on the Executive. Voting takes only a few minutes of your time. Please don't leave it to a handful of others.
The new compact format is designed to minimise the use of (recycled) paper. Please follow the instructions to ensure your vote counts.
Polls close on Friday 21 November.

RESEARCH CONFERENCE SHARES WORLD WIDE
AARE 2008 conference will webcast keynote speakers' presentations and AARE Awards ceremonies from QUT Kelvin Grove Campus using WebEx [sponsored for AARE].
If you can't come to the conference but would like to hear the keynote speakers and see their presentation slides it is easy to do. Send a message to Peter Jeffery pjeff@aare.edu.au with the subject WEBEX WANTED and we will give you a free phone number and website connection to use.
You can find the times and days of the keynote presentations in the time-table http://www.aare.edu.au/conf2008/ttable.xls so you know what time to be at your computer and phone. I will send detailed times later. The keynote speakers are Bernadette Baker, Noel Gough, Barry McGaw, and Martin Nakata. Their topics are given on AARE website at http://www.aare.edu.au/conf2008/keynotes.pdf
If you want to, you can get a group of "stay at homes" to join you watching and listening because your one connection to the event is able to be projected or a small group can gather round a computer and hands free phone.
This free service is particularly helpful to colleagues in Departments with restricted travel opportunities or those who wish to meet the "green way" with no jet fuel used.

Please do NOT use "reply to" for responses to AARE broadcast messages. All replies carrying the same subject name as our outgoing message, are deleted unread due the large number of automatic "vacation" messages that members' email servers generate.
If you want to ask or tell us something, please create a NEW MESSAGE with a suitable subject line and it will be read and responded to. We can't respond to every message on a same day basis, so please be patient. AARE broadcast messages go to over 1200 members.
Conference Time-table Adjustments Period has ended
The draft time-table has been replaced with a final version which is now being used to create the Program Book for printing, binding, transport to Brisbane, insertion into satchels and distribution to members at the registration desk.

VOTING IS YOUR RIGHT - USE IT!
While the eyes of the world are fixed on the lead-up to the US Presidential elections, AARE is having its own little race to the ballot box. Elections are underway for a number of positions on the AARE Executive for 2009 (and beyond). For some positions, this will be the first election held under the new Constitution which introduces two- and three-year terms for Executive positions.
In recent years the proportion of members voting in elections for Executive positions has been very low. While positive interpretations of this are possible, it can also be seen as threatening AARE's claim to be a democratic organisation. Where is the democracy when the composition of the Executive, and therefore the fate of the Association, is decided by a handful of members?
In an attempt to save trees, costs and members' time, we trialled the use of internet ballots for the elections in 2006 and 2007. We recognise that a number of members experienced difficulties with the electronic voting system. This year we are reverting to the traditional paper and post ballots in the hope that members will find this more user-friendly and be more inclined to exercise their democratic right to vote. We have tried to keep the format compact so as to minimise recycled paper usage.
Watch for an envelope from AARE next week and be sure to cast your vote before the polls close on 21 November.

AV requirements at the conference
All presentation rooms at QUT have multimedia equipped systems which include data projectors, network ports, and other equipment that allow presenters to include multimedia presentations, visual and audio resources, and other media in their presentations. This operating environment uses MS Office 2007 (however files produced on earlier versions of MS Office will work), internet explorer, media player, etc. Student helpers can assist if you are not used to using Office 2007. We strongly encourage everyone to bring their presentation on a USB stick.
If you require internet access for your presentation, you need to pay for this via the online conference registration form before 7th November. We will then provide you with a username and password and you will be able to access the internet from your presentation room. As soon as you go to an external website, a dialogue box will pop up and ask for your username and password - so you should do this before the presentation begins.
If you have special programs that may not run on standard PC Microsoft software, you may bring your own laptop and plug it in. If you want to do this, you should set your screen resolution to 1024 x 760 and if you use a Macintosh laptop, you will need to bring your own adapter to plug into a PC. Please note that internet connection from your laptop is more complicated, so if you need to use your own laptop, or have any requirements that may be outside what is described above, please let AARE office aare@aare.edu.au know as soon as possible so our AV people can provide for this.

2008 conference time-table [schedule] for perusal
AARE Brisbane, 2008 will be a vibrant and exciting program. The Committee has attempted to provide lots of opportunities for rigorous debate and discussion. We are excited about the Keynote Presentations and the Focus Panels, which will be opportunities to engage around topics of relevance for education and research in our times. We are also hopeful that participants will take up the many opportunities to engage socially or within SIGs.
A few points to consider as you look at the time-table http://www.aare.edu.au/conf2008/ttable.xls from which the Program will be made.
The AARE program is complex and there are many variables to consider.
The AARE conference is a four day conference and it is possible that your sessions will be scheduled across those four days.
Requests for particular days have been taken into account where ever possible. The programming Committee have done their best to be helpful, however within the constraints of such a large program it has not been possible to fit all of the many requests.
Participants are reminded that symposia are either 1 hour (up to 3 papers) or two hours (> 3 papers) as per the call for papers. The Chair of each symposium session, in consultation with the authors, is invited to organise the time within those timeslots to best fit the work being presented.
Participants are reminded that when planning your conference schedule it is important to consider that papers within each symposia slot will not proceed as a sequence of 1/2 hour papers. The symposia are spaces to present collaboratively, debate, discuss etc. and should be taken as a whole session when planning where you will attend.
Please check for clashes on the program. As the chair or lead author of symposia or single paper presentations we ask that you check that no one in your session - including discussants, chairs etc - has a clash with another paper in the same session.
Please remember that it is the lead author's responsibility to ensure everyone involved in your session receives information sent about that paper.
If you notice any clashes with the program please let us know at aare@aare.edu.au so that we might attempt to make adjustments before the program is sent to the printers.

Book Launch Opportunities AARE 2008 Conference
Dear AARE Members,
Are you attending the Brisbane conference this year, and do you have a recently published book, monograph or edited collection?
Have you considered asking your publisher if they would support a Book Launch of your publication at the Conference?
The Brisbane, 2008 Conference Committee would like to offer you two exciting opportunities:
  1. A featured Book Launch (to be programmed at a time suitable to yourself, your publisher and the Program Committee). For further details about costs and scheduling please contact Annette Woods on annette.woods@qut.edu.au or 07 31383184. Papers are lodged or deposited in the digital archive in pdf file format. Papers are not edited, they are "authors' final drafts" [in the parlance of digital repositories now gaining favour]. Copyright is vested in the authors who may publish various journal articles based on the conference paper if they wish.
Hard copies of papers deposited with the secretariat are passed to ACER Cunningham Library for indexing in the Australian Education Index which is linked to many similar indexing services overseas. CDs or discs containing digital copies of text papers are transported to AARE office where they are checked and loaded onto AARE website. Note AARE does not include PowerPoint [or similar] presentations in the Conference Papers Collections. Prior to 2008 the collection has also been published on CD as a "fixed digital format" but this is not planned for 2008 at present.
