- CONFERENCE 2005 GREAT SUCCESS
- The conference at Parramatta was a great success. Five days of talking, talking talking! Many hundreds of papers were presented and discussed and other forums for discussion of topical items of interest to the profession took place. The food was great but the complimentary Ponchos either brought rain or kept it off when the thunderstorms struck. Parramatta taxis now know a) there is a UWS Parramatta Campus, b) where it is and how to get there and c) where to go when you do get there! The hotels were all full too. Convenor Michael was so jubilant with the event he was seen ice-cream snatching in main street Parramatta on Thursday!
- LOST PROPERTY
- As the Secretariat drove home on Friday, we pressed the door lock control on the lost set of keys we have every time we saw a Honda. Didn't find the owner. But we can get into their house! If they got to the long term car park off a flight and then discovered the keys were lost ... oh my!
-
- What we have for claiming:
- Honda car keys
- several black folding umbrellas
- A propelling pencil
- diamond hair clip
-
- earring [left or right]
-
- Please claim these by phoning 0359649296 to answer simple identification questions before we post the item to you.
-
- DEPOSITS OF PAPERS AND DISKS
- Goodonyer! A very high rate of return all labelled correctly this conference.
- Not so goodonyer -- some failed the PDF test [not on their computer but available just down the passage at any university.] AARE will do it for you but if we had to do it for everyone it would cost days of clerical charges.
- Not so goodonyer --some did not hand in a hardcopy for ACER Library - bad luck on getting into the Australian Education Index because AARE will not print it for you.
- Not so goodonyer -- some did not hand in digital copy - too bad for getting in the AARE Digital Archive.
- People who must send it LATE, LATE, LATE ----
you have till Xmas Eve that's all.

- COPYRIGHT IN ALL PAPERS
- Copyright in all papers remains vested in the authors. This right is NOT negated by giving them on disk to AARE for the Digital Archive.
- PRESIDENT GALE WRITES
- "The author of a non-refereed paper presented at AARE and which is later archived on AARE's website retains copyright so s/he can legitimately submit it to a journal for publishing in that journal."
- UQ DIGITAL ARCHIVE
- This university has started to collect academic works by its staff for digital archiving. It has explicitly stated that authors rights to submit the article to a journal are NOT impeded by making it accessible in a digital archive.
-
- AARE DIGITAL ARCHIVE
- This contains many hundreds of refereed and non-refereed papers some of which have appeared in journal edited versions after the conference. Journal versions seldom are the same as the versions digitally archived [where there is virtually no length limit and full data can be included]. Copyright is in the form of the words. Copyright belongs to authors in Australia without any need to claim it. Since 1989 AARE members have been building a world class full text repository, on a voluntary basis, which is admired and used by scholars in the public interest. This is an AARE project of world significance.
- Please hand in a copy of your paper at conference on disk.

- LAST DAY FOR BOOKINGS
- Today is the last day for receiving payments for the 2005 CONFERENCE DINNER. Please use the on-line system for instant receipts and claim back from your employer or sponsor if you are entitled. AARE needs to get the money today to cater for you.
- Likewise the Association has arranged a 30 Years After Whitlam Party following the final forum on Thursday. This will be near the Whitlam Institute on UWS Parramatta Campus and Gough might be able to attend. For catering purposes you need to pay today [on-line] to get onto the list to attend this once in a lifetime event.
-
- PROGRAM ADJUSTED
- The program is constantly adjusted as people withdraw from the conference. See it on the AARE website. All those people who are coming are advised to check the program and the abstracts and plan their academic content participation before collecting their Program Book and Abstract Book on Sunday if possible.
- AVOID QUEUEING
- Anyone who has not paid their registration will have to do so before getting a name tag as these are made by the accounting software MYOB. Only one person handles the money - Ruth Jeffery, so it is possible that a long queue might form to see her. Please pay before you get to the event. Use the on-line system today. It is fast -- receipt within 60 seconds! That also helps planning and catering.

- PROGRAM BOOK ALMOST COMPLETE
- The final details are being placed into the Program Book and some people are advising their flight bookings and requesting changes accordingly. The program has been constructed around educational meaningful themes using all of each of 4 days. This cohesiveness will be destroyed trying to fit in with airlines schedules.
- The conference assumes people will confer and join other papers as audience and discussion participants not just "Present and Leave".
- Check the program on-line because the final version will be posted there after the MSS for the Program Book goes to the printer.

- AARE 2005 CONFERENCE PROGRAM IS UP!
-
- Members, especially presenters are invited to check the Program for AARE 2005 Conference on AARE website. It is in Excel. Go to AARE home page, then conferences, then 2005 Parramatta, then on the Parramatta sub index click on Program in Excel.
- The program has been constructed by assembling all the papers using the AARE keywords. Every abstract is then read to fine tune the assignment of papers in a stream. SIGs coordinators stream papers in their SIGs. Papers are kept together in sensible groupings as much as possible but some authors have their names on multiple papers and so it is impossible to avoid clashes with their name/authorship.
- Search using your papercode or your name to find your spot in the Program. Report any errors / clashes to aare@aare.edu.au This Program will be converted to Word and sent to the printer on Wednesday 2nd November at 10.00am.
- Please read Guidelines for 2005 Presenters also on the website.

- ABSTRACT BOOK COMPLETED
- The 2005 Abstract Book is completed and in printing. Changes and withdrawals will be made to the website version but the book is fixed. It is 400pp plus a detailed index of 30pp. This work is a reference on research in Australia. It will be in your satchel when you collect it on Sunday or after. We recommend prior study of the abstracts on-line as it will take a lot of work on Sunday night to plan what you want to go to otherwise.
- PROGRAM FINAL DRAFT COMPLETED
- The massive and complex task of programming 800 presentations with multiple authors over 4 days without clashes has been completed to final draft stage. We will put that on the website as soon as possible [late next week] for people to check their program positions. If you find a problem report it to aare@aare.edu.au attention Wendy and PLEASE QUOTE THE PAPERCODE!

- AARE NEWS #52 OCTOBER
- Here is a message from the Editor of AARE Newsletter.
- AARE NEWS #52 is now on-line at http://www.aare.edu.au/news/newsplus/news52.pdf
- This issue of the newsletter is packed with last minute announcements about exciting features of the forthcoming conference in Parramatta. Please read the issue from cover to cover [there aren't any covers on-line, so beginning to end!].
- The printed version of AARE NEWS #52 in its beautifully formatted style is now being packed and mailed to all financial members of the Association. It will take a few days to pack and post to 1400 members so you should get it about the end of next week.
- This is the last AARE NEWS for 2005 calendar year. "Copy" is due for the first issue for 2006 on 1st March 2006.

- REFEREEING FULL PAPERS 2005 FINISHED:
- Many thanks to all members who assisted with the large refereeing task this year. All papers have sufficient reports to reach a peer review conclusion on each and reports are being posted today to researchers/authors. Ruth is now preparing the comprehensive index to the Abstract Book and it will go to the printer very soon.
- CHECK ABSTRACTS 2005:
- All abstracts including refereed papers and symposia now appear on
the AARE website. You are asked to check and report any errors in
copying and pasting your proposals.
- 2005 PROGRAM UNDER CONSTRUCTION:
- Wendy is correlating multiple submissions into a draft Program which will be posted on the AARE website for presenters to check their placements. We will notify you when to do that. There will be only a small 'window of opportunity" for changes before the book goes to the printer. If we do not have an abstract or written details of an event that is expected to happen at the conference then it will not be in the Program.
- FOCUS CONFERENCE - RESEARCH QUALITY:
- The proceedings of this conference held in Cairns in July 2005 are
now available on the AARE website. CD replication is in process and
all members who attended will be posted a copy. Legal deposit
copies will be lodged and the material is at ACER Cunningham Library
for indexing in the Australian Education Index [AEI].
- EMAIL ADDRESSES:
- For hours of amusement I have been compiling group emails and sending an attachment called Guidelines 2005 to all persons who lodged a proposal for a presentation at Parramatta. In doing this scintillating task, addresses are being entered one by one. Many are bouncing indicating that people have moved and not told us. Next these people will complain they don't know something! Please send us a change of email if you have such.

- ONLY 18 PAPERS TO BE REFEREED NOW
- AARE Office is pleased to report that the long effort to obtain refereeing on papers for 2005 conference is nearly complete. We are waiting on reports from referees for just 17 papers now and we have started the preparations for sending out all the referees' reports by post. When the 17 are done all abstracts for refereed papers will join the abstracts already posted on the website. If you are sitting on a paper for refereeing please send in the report and put your colleagues out of their misery!
- CHECK THE ABSTRACTS - LAST CHANCE
- Abstracts on the website are as supplied by the authors. We copy and paste your words. Now you can check them before they are pasted into the Abstract Book and printed. Officially the Abstract Book has closed now but as it takes a long while to assemble you have just a few more hours to notify us of your errors in the abstracts on the website.
- GO GET IT
- On the website is a very helpful document called Guidelines 2005. It sets out the expectations of AARE on behalf of all members for the smooth running of the conference. In particular it tells us all how to bring our presentations to the conference so that the PPT will work for us. It also is practical about where and how the conference works for every one's benefit and enjoyment.
AARE NEWS # 52-
- The last newsletter for 2005 is coming. 1st October is the "copy date". This issue must be on time so that it reaches people before they head off for AARE 2005 Conference at Parramatta. It will carry lots of last minute information about the dazzling array of events at conference this year.
- NOMINATIONS FOR AARE EXECUTIVE

- EARLY BIRD CONFERENCE REGISTRATION DISCOUNT RATE CLOSING
- AARE allows a special discount on registration rates for people who pay by 31 st August prior to the Annual Conference. This early cash flow is encouraged by discounting so that the Association can pay accounts for printing, venue deposits, satchels and similar in preparation for the event.
- This discount rate will be removed on Friday 2 nd September, 2005 after a couple of "days of grace" and the registration rates will revert to "normal". The on-line registration form will show the normal rates until a few weeks prior to conference. At that time a penalty "late fee" is added to the rates because late payments require special processing with additional staff and work which has to be paid for.
- REFEREEING REPORTS DELAYS
- A special arrangement regarding conference registration rates has to be made in 2005 for people who are waiting on refereeing reports. This will be done on an individual basis as some delayed refereeing reporting is due to the authors/submitters having not yet paid the refereeing administrative fee which is a pre-condition for issuing reports.
- AARE Office is waiting for referee comments on about 100 papers. All papers have been placed for refereeing but the referees have not yet completed their work on the papers. We have asked the referees to be as quick as possible but we are dependent on their voluntary efforts.

- REFEREEING CONFERENCE PAPERS 2005
- This is a brief report on a very large professional operation crucial to the functioning of AARE Conference. AARE Conference 2005 needs your help.
- AARE Office with the voluntary cooperation of some 900 academic peers of the authors of 300 papers, is refereeing the full text papers submitted for 2005. So far 71 papers have received at least 2 acceptances from the referees and so have "passed". A small number of papers have not been found acceptable to one or two of the peer referees and are hence awaiting comments from the third person refereeing that paper. Some authors have withdrawn their papers and some have changed to "review on abstract only" category [all proposals have already passed through that process]. We are still waiting for referees to agree to do the task and/or send reports for a majority of papers. It is unlikely that all refereeing will be completed before the Early-bird [discount] conference rate reverts to normal rate on 1 st September. The rate goes up by $55 on 1 st September for a full conference registration.
-
- AARE Office needs more volunteer referees. If you can help by reading a paper and responding on a brief form, please contact Ruth on aare@aare.edu.au . AARE Office works from 5.00am till 9.00pm seven days of the week on negotiations with referees. So far we have about 4,500 email letters on file about refereeing in 2005.
- Since most authors' attendance at conference is not conditional on acceptance of their fully refereed paper, members are advised not to miss out on the discount rate by delaying till their "result" is available. Register as soon as possible.
- For more information on the refereeing process to www.aare.edu.au
-
- Thankyou for your help.

- Expressions of Interest are now invited to represent the Association at AARE's designated symposium slot at the following international conferences:
- AERA (American Educational Research Association, 8-12 April, 2006)
- BERA (British Educational Research Association, 6-9 Sep, 2006)
- EERA (European Educational Research Association, 13 Sep 2006)

- CSSE (Canadian Society for the Study of Education, 27-30 May 2006)
- APERA (Asia-Pacific Educational Research Association, 28-30 November, 2006).
- AARE has established and is in the process of (re)establishing / formalising relations with other education research associations from other nations (as above). One benefit of these relations is the provision to AARE of a guaranteed symposium slot at their respective annual conferences.
- AARE Executive is calling for Expressions of Interest from groups of AARE members (at least 4 in each group) to take up the opportunity to represent the Association at these conferences.
-
- The following conditions apply:

- Groups (at least 4 in each group) must be willing to present the symposium at the closest annual AARE conference.
- Groups must also be willing to offer their symposium papers for publication in an issue of AARE's Review of Australian Research in Education (RARE), within 3 months of its first presentation
- The proposed symposium must (i) focus on an issue of particular significance to education in Australia (and more widely); (ii) detail the contributions Australian education researchers are making to this field, and (iii) argue why this issue is of significance at this particular moment.
- EOIs should be in the form required by the relevant above-named conference
- Criteria for judging the quality of EOIs will be the same as that which applies to submissions to AER (AARE's journal)
- EOIs should be submitted to the Executive via Associate Professor Sue Dockett, AARE Awards Coordinator and Executive Member ( s.dockett@uws.edu.au )
- A committee of experienced education researchers who are also AARE members will judge the merits of the EOIs. AARE reserves the right not to award the AARE symposium slot to any EOI.
- EOIs to present the AARE Symposium at the 2006 AERA Conference should be submitted by 15 August, 2005. EOIs to present the AARE Symposium at the other above named conferences should be submitted by 31 October, 2005.
- Note that the award does not include financial support and participants will be required to pay their own conference registration costs.

Really significant contributions to the quality debate.
- REGISTER NOW BEFORE THE PENALTY RATE APPLIES!
- For planning purposes we really need to have a clear idea of expected numbers. I would ask you to register for the conference by 3rd June if possible, and to encourage your colleagues to do so as well. On the 3rd of JUNE the conference registration rate will increase by $44 to compensate for the extra administrative burden [staff overtime] we will have due to handling late applications.
- AN EDUCATIONALLY SIGNIFICANT EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED!
- The conference is shaping up to be a significant event, with important potential outcomes for educational research. Don't miss it. REGISTER NOW. Use the on-line facility or contact AARE office on 03 5964 9031 or email aare@aare.edu.au Make the subject of your email CAIRNS.
- ACCOMMODATION HOLDING WILL END BOOK NOW!
- On the 1st of JUNE Kewarra Beach Resort [hotel] will release rooms for general bookings so it may be difficult for you to get in there at the AARE special rate and use the complimentary ground transport provided by Kewarra. Contact Glenwood Travel 03 9819 2933 immediately to secure your bit of tropical paradise for the conference and maybe a bit after. Reward yourself for working so hard on quality by having a quality couple of days off.
- KEWARRA IS THE VENUE FOR COMPLIMENTARY PRESIDENT'S RECEPTION SUNDAY NIGHT.
- KEWARRA IS THE VENUE FOR THE FOCUS DINNER with a local prize winning youth orchestra providing dinner music.
- SPECIAL OFFER
- AARE is offering to connect by WebEx any faculty or institution which has at least one delegate registered for the Focus conference. This will allow your colleagues who can't travel to this event [maybe because you are] to see and hear the keynote speakers and some other sessions. Contact Peter Jeffery with your email address if you want to have a Webex free connection. pjeff@aare.edu.au
- Connections by Webex are free but only to schools, departments, institutions etc that have someone attending the FOCUS Conference.
- This will be a rare chance to hear the keynote speakers in real time and engage in the discussion which follows. Please publicise this opportunity.

- WHO GETS THESE MESSAGES?
- Only AARE members are on the broadcast email list. Until proposers of papers for a conference join the Association they do not get these messages.
- OVERSEAS PROPOSALS:
- AARE Conferences are attracting increasing attention from colleagues working overseas. Some people have become regular attendees.
- FOCUS CONFERENCE - CAIRNS:
- Convenor Rob Gilbert is in the final stages of framing the program for the conference in July. Abstacts and program will be posted to AARE website by the end of the week.
- The Kewarra Beach Resort [hotel] and the James Cook University Campus at Cairns have been inspected and final arrangements are in hand. Both are excellent venues. Kewarra is keeping a block of rooms till 1st June for AARE so book now.
- Register now for this pinnacle event.
- 2005 SYDNEY - PARRAMATTA:
- AARE Office has now completed processing 629 proposals/abstracts, all those received in April. Those proposals have been sent for checking by the conference committee reviewers. The committee is feeling swamped by emails! We are now doing about 200 late proposals. We are not accepting any further proposals.
- After the committee admits or declines a proposal, proposers are sent a notice saying so. It will quote the PAPERCODE issued when we acknowledge receipt of a proposal. PAPERCODES must be used as file names and in all messages as there are many similar if not identical names of people and papers and multiple submissions by some people.

- PROPOSALS FOR AARE CONFERENCE 2005
- AARE Office has processed proposals submitted up to 4.30pm on the 29th April 2005. That means we still have to do all up to midnight that day and all proposals put in on the closing date and after. Please be patient.
- All proposals are dissected into components in a vast database. All are replied to at that point with the assigning of the PAPERCODE. All are sent to three members of the Conference Committee to ADMIT or DECLINE the proposal. When we have the committee answer we then write again to the proposers.

- ABSTRACTS FOR 2005 CONFERENCE RECEIVED
- Sorry the AARE office can't respond immediately to all the proposals received in the last few days. We are processing them as fast as we can. Please be patient.
- WHAT HAPPENS
- We process your proposal into a database. At that time we send you a PAPERCODE. At the same time we send your proposal to 3 of the 2005 Conference Committee to admit or decline the work judging its suitability for a research conference. When we hear back from the 3 reviewers we contact you again to let you know that your proposal is accepted or not.
- TIME TAKEN
- It will take several days and weeks to get through 800 proposals and we are delayed if we receive too many enquiries asking whether a particular work has been received and whether it has been admitted to the conference.

- AARE 2005 CONFERENCE ABSTRACTS CLOSE SOON
- Four days to go and the abstracts are pouring in at 60 - 100 per day. Don't miss out!
- All intending presenters must submit an abstract of their intended "paper" or activity at the Parramatta Conference on the appropriate form by 30 APRIL 2005. This allows the Committee to decide whether to admit or decline the paper, symposium or other planned activity. That includes ideas about meetings to be held during the period of the conference because all such have to be admitted or declined and placed in a room on the time-table.
- 30 th APRIL ALL ABSTRACTS DUE
- FULL PAPERS FOR REFEREEING DUE ON OR BEFORE 31 ST MAY.
- AARE 2005 CONFERENCE FULL PAPERS FOR REFEREEING
- If a person is opting for full paper refereeing prior to conference then they must submit it as an attachment in MS Word [not read only] by 31st MAY 2005 or earlier.
- If the paper is received earlier together with payment of the AUD$50 per paper adminstrative fee, work on refereeing can be started immediately resulting in earlier notification of the peer refereeing result to the authors. No payment of the administrative fee results in delays past Early-Bird Registration date and thus will cost more and put pressure on your colleagues doing the refereeing. No reports are issued to authors who have not paid. Note, anyone who asks for refereeing of their work can also expect to be asked to perform refereeing for some other papers.
- BROCHURE ERROR
- The brochure dates schedule [compiled over 12 months ago] is incorrect. The above dates are correct. All dates on the AARE website are correct. New forms incorporate new options. Please read the website information.

- FOCUS CONFERENCE PROPOSALS
- NEW DATE NEW DATE NEW DATE NEW DATE NEW DATE
Paper proposals for the AARE Focus Conference in Cairns are due by 28 th February.
- The conference is shaping up to be a major opportunity to take stock of educational research in Australia, and to consider responses in policy and practice to the government's introduction of a Quality and Accessibility Framework.
- Prospective participants can propose papers (refereed or unrefereed), symposia or some other format.
- Proposals can be submitted online at the Association's website at http://www.aare.edu.au/index.htm
- AARE Focus Conference:
Quality in Educational Research: Directions in policy and practice
- The current DEST program to establish a Research Quality Framework is likely to be one of the most significant developments in educational research in 2005. The concepts of research and the criteria for evaluating research quality, which the Framework will establish, are sure to have important implications for our work. A considered response to these developments will be crucial to ensuring that the outcomes of the process are positive for our research activities.
- As a major input to this important issue, AARE is sponsoring a Focus Conference in Cairns on July 4-5, entitled Quality in Educational Research: Directions in policy and practice. The aim of the conference is to
- consider the development of the Research Quality Framework,
- to garner the experiences of similar frameworks in other countries like the UK, and
- to identify a response to the government's program.
- The conference will bring together DEST representatives, Australian educational researchers and research leaders, and overseas educational researchers with experience of similar frameworks.
- If the conference is to fulfil its important purpose, it will need contributions from a wide range of the Association's membership and other interested parties. We invite you to attend this important event.
- Conference details can be found at < http://www.aare.edu.au/index.htm > The site includes a call for papers, proposals for which need to be submitted online by 28 th February. An option exists for fully refereed papers.

Broadcast Message 1/2/2005
- Welcome to another AARE year and our first email broadcast for 2005! As well as our regular AARE NEWS, which is typically longer (and in hard copy and downloadable from the web), these shorter electronic messages are designed to keep you in touch with the important things happening in AARE.
- I trust you were able to enjoy a break after our huge conference in Melbourne last November / December. Welcome to new members who have joined us as a result of attending the conference for the first time.
- We are particularly delighted to have so many new members from outside Australia (25% of those who attended the conference were from other parts of the world) and also new members from schools, government departments and, of course, universities.
- Welcome all. I trust AARE is a forum in which you are able to make a contribution to education research as well as benefit from the contributions of others.
- We have a new look Executive this year with several new faces and some old ones as well! As President, I am looking forward to working with them on the challenges that currently face us. You can see the names on our website. Go to the home page, select site map then click on 2005 Executive.
- 2005 promises to be an exciting year for AARE, with two significant conferences, increasing numbers of SIGs and SIG events, a new Review of Australian Research in Education (RARE) edition, workshops, business plans, the AER appearing in Ingenta, submissions to government and much more!
- I will expand on these and others matters in the first issue of AARE News (look out for this in late February / early March). Several items are focused on making a contribution to the current Quality Research agenda.
- In particular, AARE is convening a mid-year conference specifically on Quality in Education Research, to be held in Cairns and convened by Professor Rob Gilbert from JCU. (Rob's invitation to attend is included below.) It will be quite a different conference from our annual end-of-year event; smaller, tighter, far more focused on one issue, more workshops with specific outcomes, papers available for reading before the event and so on, but still with the international character of AARE conferences. The Executive has created this forum as one way in which the association can make a contribution to this important agenda. We encourage you to make the most of the opportunity to contribute.
- Information is also available on our website (www.aare.edu.au) about our annual conference, this year to be held at the Parramatta campus of UWS and convened by Professor Michael Singh. More information will be available about this conference as the year unfolds but if you haven't already done so, mark Sunday 27 November to Thursday 1 December in your diary and plan on being there.
- Finally, one last bit of information. The 2004 December issue of AER is now available online. Go to AARE home page, select AER in the index bars and then click on the image of the AER for contents of the issue. [As this is on the WWW Click on the A.E.R. button in the menu above.]
- Best wishes for a great 2005. I trust it is a fulfilling and prosperous year for you, professionally and personally.
