- Welcome to the AARE's collection of papers presented at the 2003 Mini-Conference at Newcastle on the 2nd - 4th of October, 2003.
- Copyright
- Copyright of the CD (c) Australian Association for Research in Education, 2003. Each paper is copyright (c) of the individual author or authors named on each paper.
- Disclaimer
-
- The condition of any paper is the responsibility of the author.
- General instructions for formatting documents were provided for authors to follow, but the compiler of the collection has not examined the resulting files to check their completeness.
- CD Content
- This collection was compiled from the papers presented by AARE members registered for the AARE 2003 Mini-Conference Newcastle 2003. Only papers submitted in electronic media are included. Many other papers were presented at the conference. The miss-match between the Abstracts listed in the Abstracts Book and the papers on this CD is due to failure of some authors to submit their work for publication in this format.
- Hardcopy Collection
- AARE deposits in ACER Library, all hardcopies of papers submitted to the Conference Registration staff. The hardcopy collection is not equal to the list of Abstracts in the Abstracts Book or to the collection of papers on the CD. ACER Library includes all AARE conference papers it receives in the Australian Education Index.
- Refereeing
- All Abstracts were peer reviewed. In addition some authors requested that their full papers be refereed prior to presentation at the conference. Such papers are indicated by the symbol (r) against the paper code in the Abstracts and in the Alphabetic index of papers.
- Searching
- Author searches or any other key word searching is available within the Abstracts file using an Internet web browser. Papers are distinct files in Adobe Acrobat PDF to allow searching within papers and to facilitate users' preferences for file types, printing and so on.
- Paper Codes
- Paper codes comprise the first 2 letters of the family name of the first author of a paper followed by 2 digits "03" to designate the year of presentation and publication, followed by a 3 digit running number assigned by the conference organizers in order of receipt of the abstracts for presentation proposals, followed by the file type designation pdf]. A 'Z' after the papercode was added to distinguish Newcastle papers from the papers presented in the AARE joint conference 2003 [Auckland].
- AARE
- AARE is the premier educational research association in Australia committed among other things to dissemination of educational research. The Association comprises approximately 1000 individual members who pay an annual subscription to further the work of the Association which includes publication of conference papers, the Australian Education Researcher [journal] and AARE News [newsletter]. In addition the Association maintains an internet web site with thousands of full text research documents available on-line.

- Please report any PROBLEMS or ERRORS to AARE
- What is the full paper refereeing process?
- We send full papers submitted to AARE Conferences for optional full paper refereeing, to sets of three members of the Association or other academics in the relevant field of study. AARE Office keeps details of potential referees on file from year to year. All refereeing is independent with no referee informed as to the names of the author/s nor other referees.
- Potential referees receive:
- an e-mail message asking them to do the refereeing task,
- an attached file containing the full text of the paper for reviewing and
- an attached file which is the referee response form.
- Referees are asked to:
- respond immediately to the e-mail message saying whether they can do the task within 10 working days, [if not we will have to find another person],
- open the attached full text paper, and
- open and print off a copy of the attached referees' response form for sending back to AARE Conference Secretariat on +61 3 5964 9586.
- We don't want any comments other than in the space on the referee response form [which can be used in the case of an appeal or adjudication by a panel], and which is posted to the author after removing referee identity.
