CONFERENCE WELCOME

On behalf of the Australian Association for Research in Education and the organising committee, we warmly invite you to attend the AARE Annual Conference to be held in Fremantle, 2001.

Geographically and culturally, Fremantle is an ideal setting for "Crossing borders: new frontiers for educational research", the theme of this year's conference. During the conference, participants will be able to make new connections, visit new methodological fields and identify new research challenges.

To help us explore these themes we offer a particular welcome to our colleagues from the Educational Research Association of Singapore. Many of us have fond memories of the fine hospitality extended to us by Singapore in 1996 and we will enjoy working in association with ERA again this year.

Another strong feature of our 2001 conference will be its venue - the University of Notre Dame, located in the beautiful and historic port of Fremantle and housed in refurbished warehouses and wool-stores. Notre Dame is within walking distance of Fisherman's Harbour (substantially redeveloped for the 1980's America's Cup) and a range of ethnically diverse restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and bars.

From Fremantle it is only a 25 minute train ride to Perth, a short ferry trip to Rottnest Island, a half day river boat excursion to the Swan Valley wine region, and a hire car day break to the South West forests, vineyards and rugged coastline.

The program, presentations, people and place of our 2001 conference will make it a professionally worthwhile and personally enjoyable experience. We look forward to seeing you there.

OVERVIEW OF CONFERENCE PROGRAM

Main Theme

Crossing borders: New frontiers for educational research

The conference theme is intended to give a conceptual focus to the presentations. Essentially this focus is about the changing or blending traditional frames which have shaped educational research, policy and practice. It is also about the manner in which the reframing takes place.

Presentations can address the main theme in many ways. For example, they may focus on new challenges, opportunities and breakthroughs within or across fields, such as those listed below:

numerous other fields.

The conference will comprise:

CALL FOR PRESENTATION PROPOSALS

The organising committee invites proposals in the form of individual research papers and symposia or panel discussions that focus on any aspect of the conference theme. Please note that a presenter may be principal author for no more than two presentations. Case studies from practitioners and students are welcome. The following formats apply to all proposals be they: (a) individual papers, student works-in progress, symposia, or panel discussion; (b) non- refereed or fully referred papers. Symposia and discussion panel members should be particularly careful to submit papers to the Conference Secretariat. This will ensure the inclusion of your work in the Conference Program and Abstract Book with full accreditation and referencing.

Individual Papers / Student Works-in-Progress

Individual papers are usually presented in traditional format, with about 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Copies of papers (to hand out to those in the session, suggested quantity 15-20) should be supplied by the presenter.

Individual papers will be presented in blocks of 2 or 3 in sequence with the last presenter in the block acting as 'chair and timekeeper' for each presentation.

Symposia

A symposium is designed to allow for multiple presentations on one theme or issue. It should not be used to present a number of related papers in a succession of individual paper formats. Normally, a symposium will include no more than 4 presentations in a 2 hour block, or 3 presentations in a shorter block, and should allow at least 30 minutes for discussion. Within this framework the organiser and chairperson of the symposium can arrange the symposium in whatever manner is suitable for the topic.

Symposia will occupy a complete presentation block in the conference program, in parallel with other sessions in other rooms.

The organiser of the symposium must provide the symposium title, an abstract of the theme and details of the individual presenters, presentation titles and abstracts to the Conference Secretariat.

Panel Discussions

In this session format, a chairperson organises the members of a panel who will speak briefly to summarise their paper in order to raise issues for discussion relevant to the topic. After the brief introductory remarks, the session should be a free-ranging discussion run under the direction of the chairperson. This format is intended to stimulate discussion amongst panelists and members of the audience.

A panel discussion will occupy a complete presentation block in the conference program, in parallel with other sessions in other rooms.

Details of the panelists, papers and panel discussion topic must be provided to the Conference Secretariat.

Papers Refereed by Abstract Only

All intending presenters are required to submit a 200word abstract of their paper by 30 April 2001. (See How to Propose Paper section)

Intending presenters should receive notification by email of the acceptance of their proposal by 30th June 2001.

Following notification that the proposal is acceptable, registration should be paid by 31 August 2001.

A further official letter, giving the date of your presentation will be mailed from the Conference Secretariat after 30 September 2001.

Fully Refereed Papers (Optional)

Full paper refereeing is optional, but all proposed fully refereed paper presentations require: (a) an abstract of the paper to be emailed by 30 April 2001 - see How to Propose a Paper section - and (b) the full paper to be emailed by 25 May 2001 to aare@aare.edu.au

Full paper refereeing adds a considerable workload to the Conference Committee and members acting in a voluntary capacity as referees. Your cooperation with procedures and submission dates is essential for the smooth operation of the refereeing process. An additional non-refundable refereeing fee of $20 must be sent with a full registration for the conference. This payment is in addition to the registration fee. The $20 is not refunded if a paper is withdrawn after refereeing.

Intending presenters should receive notification by email of the acceptance of their refereed paper by no later than 16 July 2001. Referee reports will be issued by fax. Proposers will receive a statement that their full paper has been refereed by two independent referees (or three referees in the case where the first two referees do not agree) and that the paper has been accepted or not for this conference.

The AARE Executive Committee policy is that papers submitted for full paper refereeing but rejected by the refereeing process may not then be presented in the 'papers refereed by abstract only' category.

CD PUBLICATION

A post-conference CD will be prepared of all the AARE 2001 Conference abstracts and full text papers submitted on disk to the AARE Office by presenters. The CD will be distributed free to conference participants and for a fee to others. It will be published by Easter 2002.

The Conference Venue

The University of Notre Dame Australia is an integral part of the city of Fremantle. It was founded in 1990 and since then has grown from a few students to over 1500. Although established fairly recently, the University is housed in refurbished historic buildings, blends in easily with the city and is endowed with an old world charm.

The port of Fremantle lies at the mouth of the Swan River, is the seaside gateway to Perth, and has many places of heritage value - for example, the old Fremantle jail and Roundhouse (built by convicts and now open to the public), the Maritime Museum and Customs houses. Fremantle is especially noted for its Victorian architecture, pub houses, resturants and lively markets. Free CAT buses service most areas of central Fremantle.

Fremantle is only 25 minutes by train from Perth, a city which offers many attractions, such as: the Kings Park Botanical Gardens, Perth Zoo, Burswood Casino, old Perth Port area, Northbridge restaurant and nightclub centre, and a new belltower with bells donated from the famous St Martins in the Field church in London. Free public CAT buses service most areas of the central city.

Getting from the Airport

The taxi fare to Perth from the Perth domestic airport is $20.23 and from the Perth international airport it is $25.28. The shuttle bus fare from these airports is $7.10. The taxi fare to Fremantle from the Perth domestic and international airports is $40.45 and the shuttle bus fare is $12.15.

Daily Travel

The University of Notre Dame is about 300 metres from the Fremantle railway station. Trains travel from Perth to Fremantle about every 20 minutes and the trip takes about 25 minutes. Fremantle can be reached from Perth by buses that travel along the Canning Highway (south if the Swan River) and Stirling Highway (north of the Swan River). These buses stop within 300 metres of Notre Dame.
