Betty Watts Indigenous Researcher Award

AARE makes this award to encourage and support educational research by Indigenous Australian researchers. The winner of the award will be announced at the Annual Conference.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must demonstrate that they meet all the following criteria:

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • be a member of AARE
  • identify as Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • be able to attend the full conference in the year of the award
  • be willing to present a conference paper or lead a symposium based on their research, and deliver the paper as scheduled
  • submit a conference paper proposal by the closing date for conference paper proposals to aare@aare.edu.au on the appropriate conference form
  • nominate for the Award at the time of submitting their paper proposal
  • have not previously received a Betty Watts Indigenous Researcher award
  • submit the paper for publication in AARE Conference Papers Collection and / or submit the paper to the AER for publication

As the intent of the award is to honour and facilitate outstanding scholarship, applications will be judged on the basis of the following academic merit criteria:

Merit Criteria

  • Originality
  • Contemporary significance and /or scholarly relevance
  • Conceptual, methodological and theoretical soundness
  • Disciplined, focused and persuasive argument
  • Coherent organisation and clarity of written expression
  • Comprehensive reference to appropriate literature

Please Note:

  • Proposals, using the form for the Annual Conference, must be submitted by the closing date for proposals for the Annual Conference.
  • The full paper for the award must be submitted by 30 October in each year.
  • The Award is made in conjunction with the Annual Conference, not any special conference such as a focus conference.
  • Proposers may opt for full paper refereeing for their proposed paper at the time of lodging the proposal. If so, the closing date for a full paper for refereeing applies.
  • Only one paper per researcher / research team should be submitted for the Award in any year. Papers previously submitted may not be re-submitted.
