Australian Association for Research in Education

What is AARE?

AARE is the national association for fostering educational research in Australia. AARE facilitates contact between educational researchers and supports the development of high quality educational research. Key activities of AARE include:

  • an international Annual Conference held in a different location each year;
  • research development workshops around Australia;
  • support for the formation and activities of Special Interest Groups;
  • The Australian Educational Researcher - a Thompson (ISI) ranked journal;
  • AARE NEWS with information about activities and issues for education researchers; and
  • awards for postgraduate students and outstanding education researchers.

    Research Development Workshops

    AARE research workshops and seminars use the expertise of local and visiting scholars, and are competitively priced with significant discounts to members. Research development workshops seek to:

    • address the research needs of education researchers at all career stages;
    • service regions throughout Australia;
    • develop links with faculties of education and other educational research associations;
    • support the methodological and intellectual development of educational research;
    • create organic education research communities around educational issues; and
    • advance high quality educational research in Australia and internationally.

    Publications

    The Australian Educational Researcher

    The Australian Educational Researcher is the international, peer reviewed journal published by AARE and distributed on-line as an open-access journal. The Australian Educational Researcher is published three times a year and is a Thomson (ISI) indexed journal. The aim of AER is to:

    • Promote understandings of educational issues through the publication of original research and scholarly essays.
    • Inform education policy through the publication of papers utilising a range of research methodologies and addressing issues of theory and practice.
    • Provide a research forum for education researchers to debate current problems and issues.
    • Provide an international and national perspective on education research through the publication of book reviews, scholarly essays, original quantitative and qualitative research and papers that are methodologically or theoretically innovative.

    AARE NEWS

    This newsletter is published four times a year and distributed on-line and in-print to AARE members. It provides the latest news about national and international development in educational research, information about AARE activities, conferences, workshops, awards, research and grants received by members, and more ...!

    Review of Australian Research in Education (RARE)

    RARE is an occasional publication of AARE. A subcommittee of AARE Executive considers publication proposals based on agreed criteria. AARE has published the following monographs and edited collections.

    Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

    A SIG is a group of AARE members with shared research interests. They support networking with fellow researchers. SIGs undertake a diverse range of activities including organising events, discussion groups, research training, convening symposia, contributions to AARE NEWS and The Australian Educational Researcher, etc. Information on SIGs is available at http://www.aare.edu.au or by emailing sigs@aare.edu.au

    Special Awards

    AARE has several special awards for exceptional achievements by members:

    Award for Doctoral Research in Education for recognition of excellence in educational research by doctoral students. Faculties nominate one thesis a year for consideration by a panel of experts from AARE to select the one thesis showing excellence in doctoral research.

    Postgraduate Student Travel Award to attend the AARE annual conference

    Honorary Life Membership Award for outstanding career achievements

    Betty Watts Indigenous Researcher Award for an outstanding AARE conference paper written by an Indigenous Australian researcher

    Early Career Researcher Award for an outstanding early career researcher paper presented at the annual conference

    Annual Conference

    The annual, international conference of AARE is held in a different state or territory each year and sometimes with another international research association. The AARE conference is the premier event for educational researchers in Australia and the region. AARE awards are bestowed at the annual conference and the AARE AGM is held during the conference.
